Tools and Supplies Needed

  • Clean cloth
  • Absorbent material (e.g. paper towel)
  • White vinegar
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Steam cleaner
  • Enzyme-based cleaner

How to Clean Red Wine Stains from Area Rugs

  1. Blot the stain with a clean cloth or paper towel to absorb as much of the wine as possible.
  2. Mix one tablespoon of white vinegar with two cups of warm water in a bowl.
  3. Dip a cloth in the solution and dab onto stain.
  4. Mix one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid with two cups of warm water in another bowl.
  5. Soak a cloth in the solution and dab onto stain.
  6. Continue to blot and dab the area with the two solutions until stain is gone.
  7. If the stain persists, use a steam cleaner to go over the area.
  8. If the stain is still not gone, try an enzyme-based cleaner to get rid of the tough stain.

Tips for Preventing Red Wine Stains

  • Avoid drinking red wine directly on the rug. Place a coaster or another protective piece underneath.
  • Always have some napkins handy in case of spills.
  • Act quickly to clean up the spill. The sooner you treat the stain, the more likely you are to succeed in removing it.
