Red wine is a difficult stain to remove and the longer it stays on the material, the harder it is to get out. The sooner you act, the better chance you have of removing the stain completely.
Before taking further action, you must blot area with a clean cloth or paper towel. Press the cloth firmly against the wine stained area to remove as much of the liquid as possible. It’s important to avoid scrubbing the material, as this may spread the wine further. You may have to repeat this step several times to ensure that most of the liquid is removed.
Mix together one teaspoon of washing-up liquid, one teaspoon of white vinegar, and a quarter-teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda until you have a thick paste. Gently rub paste onto stain using a soft-bristled brush in a circular motion. Don’t scrub too hard – paste should be enough to lift the stain. Once you’re done, leave the paste on stain for two minutes.
Rinse paste off the material using cold water. Do this gently and avoid rubbing the material, as this could spread the stain even more. Check the stain to see if it’s gone. If not, repeat steps three and four until the stain has disappeared.
Once the stain has been removed, use a wet cloth and some washing-up liquid to clean area around the stain of any remaining residue. Dry the material with a clean, dry cloth and check area again for any signs of the stain.
