Red wine spills happen and it's easy to panic at the sight of that deep-red stain spreading. Fortunately, there are several ways to remove red wine stains from clothes and carpets. Here are a few to try.

Removing Red Wine Stains from Clothes

When you spill red wine on your clothes, the best way to remove the stain is to act quickly. Begin by blotting up as much of the wine as possible using a clean white cloth or paper towel. Next, fill a bowl with cool water and add a few drops of laundry detergent. Soak the stained area in detergent solution for five to 10 minutes. Afterward, take the garment to the sink and rinse out the stain with cool water.

If the stain persists, create a paste from equal parts laundry detergent and white vinegar and rub paste into the stained area. Let the paste sit for a few minutes, then wash with cool water. You can also try a stain remover like Shout Advanced Gel or OxiClean.

Removing Red Wine Stains from Carpets

For carpets, again start by blotting up as much of the wine as possible with a white cloth or paper towel. Mix one tablespoon of liquid hand dishwashing detergent and one tablespoon of white vinegar with two cups of cool water. Apply a small amount of the mixture to the stain and allow it to stand for several minutes. Take a clean white cloth and blot the stain to remove the wine. Rinse by sponging with cool water.

If the stain still won't budge, try making a paste with equal parts table salt and white vinegar. Apply the paste onto the stained area and let it stand for 10 minutes. Take a clean white cloth and dab the area to remove the paste and the stain.

No matter what type of fabric or carpet, always remember to test a small, hidden area of the item prior to cleaning.
