Take a damp cloth and gently remove as much of the stain as you can. Don't rub too hard - you don't want to spread it around. You just want to remove the excess material.
Now that you've removed the excess, it's time to treat the stain with a cleaning solution. You can use a store-bought cleaner, or a homemade mixture of one part white vinegar and two parts water. Apply the cleaner directly to the affected area, and then blot with a clean cloth. Don't rub, just blot.
Now that the stain has been treated, it's time to rinse it away with cold water. Fill a bowl with cold water, and dip the stained area into the bowl. Gently swish it around in the water, and then dry it off with a clean cloth.
Next, it's time to wash the garment according to the label instructions. If the label suggests hand washing, do so. Otherwise, you can machine wash it in cold or warm water. Be sure to use a mild detergent and avoid using fabric softener. Then, hang the item on a line or lay it flat to dry.
