Removing Wet Stains

If the stain is still wet, start by blotting up as much of the liquid as possible with white paper towels or a plain white cloth. To prevent the stain from setting in, avoid rubbing or scrubbing the fabric. If further cleaning is desired, dab a solution of 1/2 teaspoon of mild dish soap and 1 cup warm water onto the stain with a clean cloth. Then, use a dry cloth to blot the area until it is just damp. Be sure not to oversaturate the fabric as too much moisture can damage silk.

Treating Set-In Stains

If the stain has already dried, pre-treat it with a gentle stain remover. Dab a small amount of the product onto the stain and let it sit for several minutes, then use a damp cloth to gently rub stain away. Avoid using a brush or scrubbing the fabric too hard—this can damage the delicate silk fibers.

Using Rubbing Alcohol

If the stain persists after pre-treating, try rubbing alcohol. Dilute a quarter-cup of rubbing alcohol with one-quarter cup of cold water and gently dab the solution onto the stain with a clean cloth. Use a dry cloth to blot the area until it is just damp. Avoid overwetting fabric and be sure to use cold water. Hot water could cause the stain to set permanently.

When To Seek Professional Help

If all else fails and the stain remains, it is time to seek professional help. A professional dry cleaner will have knowledge, tools and chemicals to deal with any tough stains that may prove difficult to remove. Although this route may cost more money, it may be the only way to effectively remove a stubborn pet stain from your silk item.
