If you have a stain that's difficult to remove, mix one part white vinegar to three parts distilled water and begin pre-treating spot. White vinegar is a natural disinfectant and is effective at breaking down proteins like pet urine. This method also has deodorizing effects.
To try and remove the stain, use a liquid detergent meant for heat-activated fabrics. Another option is to use a specialty enzyme product available in pet stores. Follow the directions on the packaging. If possible, launder the shorts directly after treating with the detergent or enzyme product to maximize chances of stain removal.
If the pet urine stain is fresh, try dabbing it with a wet cloth and some mild soap. Don't rub the fabric, just blot gently as rubbing can cause the stain to set deeper into the fabric. Afterwards, rinse with cold water.
To prevent stain from coming back, make sure the shorts are completely dry after washing, as spots can become more prominent in damp fabric. To be sure, hang them outdoors or in an area with good air circulation, or else put on a low heat setting in the dryer.
Pet owners should look into specially formulated pet-safe detergents, which can help lessen likelihood of future staining and odors. Additionally, good cleaning habits such as immediate stain removal and frequent laundering can help protect against stubborn pet messes.
