No matter how well-trained your pet is, accidents happen. From food stains to pet-related odors, you’re likely to find yourself dealing with a few pet messes from time to time. One of the frustrating things about this is that pet stains can sometimes be tricky to remove from clothing.

But there is hope! You don’t have to resort to expensive stain removers or wear a shirt forever with an embarrassing pet stain. Here are some easy steps for cleaning pet stains from shirts:

1. Pre-Treat the Stain

The first step is to pretreat the stain with a mixture of laundry detergent and cold water. Mix 3 drops of detergent into 1 cup of cold water and mix until they’re combined. Dip a clean cloth into the mixture, and gently dab at stain. Be careful not to rub too hard, as this could spread the stain further.

2. Wash on Delicate Cycle

Once the stain has been pre-treated, put the shirt in the washing machine. Set the cycle to delicate, and use cold water. If the shirt is white, you can add a capful of bleach to the load. Just be sure to read the care tag before adding bleach to make sure the fabric won’t be damaged.

3. Air Dry

Once the shirt is done washing, it’s best to air-dry it rather than using a dryer. High temperatures can set stain, so hang shirt outside or lay it flat on a drying rack.

If your shirt still has a stain after washing, don’t worry! This may require a bit of extra elbow grease, but all you need is a pre-treatment solution and a small brush to scrub the stained area. Leave the solution to sit on stain until it has been fully removed. Once that’s done, throw the shirt in the washing machine again on a cold, delicate cycle and allow it to air dry.

Follow these three steps and you’ll be able to rid your shirts of pesky pet stains in no time. It might take a bit of extra effort, but it’s worth it to have a shirt that looks like new.
