Step 1: Blot the stain

The first step is to blot away as much of the stain as you can. Take a soft, dry cloth and gently press down on the stain. Be careful not to rub or spread the stain further into the fabric. Once you’ve blotted as much of the stain as possible, move on to the next step.

Step 2: Create a cleaning solution

Mix one teaspoon of liquid dish detergent with two cups of cold water in a small bowl. Stir mixture until the detergent is completely dissolved. Avoid using warm or hot water, as this could cause the stain to become set in the fabric.

Step 3: Soak the stain

Immerse the stained portion of the raincoat in the cleaning solution. Let it soak for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally. This will help to lift stain from the fabric.

Step 4: Rinse and dry

After soaking the fabric, rinse the area with warm water. You may have to repeat this step several times to ensure all of the soap and stain are removed. Finally, hang or lay your raincoat flat to dry. Avoid placing it in a dryer, as heat can set the stain.

Tips for preventing pet stains on raincoats

  • Keep your pet away from muddy areas. This will minimize the chances of them getting mud and other dirt on your raincoat.
  • Always inspect your pet for fleas and ticks before letting them come inside. This will prevent pet-related stains on your raincoat.
  • Groom your pet regularly to control shedding and dander.
