Before You Begin

Before you start treating the stain, there are a few things you should do first. Read the care instructions and know what type of fabric your polo shirt is made of. If your polo shirt is made of a delicate fabric like silk, it’s a good idea to take it to dry cleaner. Otherwise, here’s what you’ll need to remove pet stains from a polo shirt:

  • Paper towels or an absorbent cloth
  • Dish soap
  • Cleaning vinegar
  • Enzyme laundry detergent
  • Laundry pre-treatment spray

Step 1: Dab, Don't Rub

Once you have everything you need, you can start treating the stain. The first step is to dab the stain with a damp paper towel or absorbent cloth. Don’t rub or scrub, as this will just push the stain deeper into fabric. Keep dabbing until you’ve absorbed as much of the stain as possible.

Step 2: Pre-Treat the Stain

Now it’s time to pre-treat stain. Spray the area with a pre-treatment spray or use a mixture of dish soap and white cleaning vinegar on it. Let the pre-treatment sit on the stain for at least 10 minutes. This will help loosen any dirt, oil, and bacteria embedded in the fabric.

Step 3: Launder the Shirt

Once the pre-treatment has been sitting on stain for at least 10 minutes, you’re ready to put shirt in the wash. Use a cold water setting with an enzyme laundry detergent and let the shirt air dry. Heat from the dryer can set stains, so it’s best to let shirt air dry in order to avoid that.
