Whether you’re trying to protect your hands from a muddy walk with your dog or cleaning up an indoor accident, pet stains can leave lasting marks on your gloves that may seem impossible to remove. Before you resign yourself to replacing those glove, consider these common solutions to get rid of the tell-tale signs of pet messes.
The classic cleaning combination of soap and warm water is a great place to start when addressing pet stains on gloves. Simply fill a sink or bowl with water that’s just hot enough to comfortably keep your hand in it and add a dollop of laundry detergent or dish soap. Gently rub stained area with soapy water, being careful not to fray fabric. If necessary, use a soft sponge for tougher spots. Rinse the gloves in clean water and hang them to dry.
For pet stains that are especially stubborn, try a vinegar and baking soda solution. First, mix one part white vinegar and two parts water in a bowl. Put your stained gloves in mixture and let them sit for 30 minutes before rinsing with clean water. The vinegar should help to break up stain, but if any remnants remain, use a mixture of baking soda and water to scrub away the last of the stain. Follow up by rinsing with clean water and drying as usual.
For tough pet stains, rubbing alcohol can be a lifesaver. Fill a bowl with one part rubbing alcohol and one part water, then submerge the stained gloves in the solution. Let them soak for 10-15 minutes before removing and rinsing with clean water. Once the gloves have been rinsed and alcohol smell has dissipated, lay them out to air dry.
When dealing with pet messes, prevention is key. To guard against stained and smelly gloves, always remember to wear protective gear such as waterproof mittens or rubber gloves when walking your dog in muddy areas. For cleaning up indoors, be sure to use pet-friendly cleaning products like enzymatic cleaners to make sure the job is done right.
