When it comes to owning a pet, any pet parent knows that there is always a chance of an accident or two. Whether you're dealing with urine, vomit, or anything else that may leave a stain on your drapes and curtains, you can still restore them to looking good as new. Here are some tips to help you out.

Remove Stain Right Away

The best way to prevent a stain from becoming permanent is to get rid of it as soon as you notice it. You may need to use paper towels or a damp cloth to absorb the liquid or solids from the fabric. Make sure you don't rub the stain, as this can cause it to spread and become worse.

Determine the Fabric Type

Different fabrics require different cleaning methods. Before beginning the cleaning process, check care label on your curtains and drapes to determine if they are made from polyester, silk, velvet, or cotton. This will be important for knowing which cleaning solution to use.

Use a Cleaning Solution

If the stain is still visible after wiping down with a cloth, you can make a homemade cleaning solution. Mix one tablespoon of detergent with a cup of warm water, and then use a clean cloth to dab the solution onto the stain. If the fabric is extra delicate, like silk or velvet, use a mild detergent instead.

Try a Store-Bought Stain Remover

If you don't want to worry about making your own solution, there are plenty of store-bought stain removers out there. Again, make sure you read the instructions carefully and pick one that works with the type of fabric your curtains and drapes are made out of. Test an inconspicuous part of the fabric first, to be sure that it won't damage the material.

Rinse and Dry the Curtain

Once you've treated the affected area with a cleaning solution, rinse off the fabric with cold water. To speed up the drying process, use a hairdryer on the lowest setting. Be careful not to overheat fabric, as this can cause further damage.

Schedule Professional Cleanings

Regular professional cleanings can help keep your draperies and curtains looking their best. Depending on type of fabric, regular steam cleanings may be necessary to remove dirt and pet hair. Make sure that the cleaner you hire is experienced in working with delicate fabrics, so as not to cause any damage.
