Pre-Treating the Stain

For fresh stains, immediately try to absorb and remove as much of the stain as possible using several layers of paper towels, with a book or heavy object placed atop to help press the liquid out. Once you’ve removed as much excess liquid as possible, moisten the area with cold water.

Laundry Detergent or Shampoo

Create a mixture of laundry detergent or shampoo and cold water and use a white cloth or paper towel to blot the stain, working from the outside in. When blotting, avoid scrubbing the material so as to not spread the stain.

Rinse and Dry

Once you’ve removed as much of the stain as possible, rinse the area with cold water to remove any excess detergent residue. Finish by air-drying the fabric or use a blow dryer set to the lowest heat setting. You may need to re-attempt the stain removal process a few times before stain is completely gone.

Spot Cleaners

If the stain still remains, consider using a spot cleaner such as a carpet cleaner or spot remover designed for tough messes. Follow the product’s directions for use, and test it out on a small section of the fabric first as some products can degrade fabric quality or discolor fibers.
