Using Detergent or Soap

If you have a freshly stained coat, you can treat it with a detergent or soap solution. Combine 1/4 teaspoon of liquid dish detergent in 1 quart (1 liter) of water. You should also use a gentle brush to scrub the area, but be careful not to rub it too hard or you may damage the fabric.

Vinegar and Baking Soda

Vinegar and baking soda is another useful combination for treating pet stains. First, blot the stain with a cloth and then sprinkle baking soda over the area. Use a spray bottle to dampen the baking soda with white distilled vinegar. Allow the area to sit for 10 minutes before scrubbing it gently with a soft brush. After scrubbing, rinse out the area with cold water and blot dry with a new cloth.

Enzyme Cleaners

Enzyme cleaners are specifically designed to break down pet stains, so they're the best option if stain has been there for a while. Follow the instructions on the packaging of your chosen enzyme cleaner. They are usually applied directly to stain and need to remain wet for up to 10 minutes before being removed with a damp cloth.

Avoid these Common Mistakes

  • Don’t use warm water, as this will set the stain further into fabric.
  • Don’t use chemical cleaners such as bleach or ammonia, as these may cause damage to the material.
  • Don’t rub the stain, as this will spread stain further and make it harder to remove.
  • Don’t use a hairdryer to dry the garment, as this could damage the fabric.

Final Tips

It's always best to try and remove the stain as soon as possible, as the longer it remains, the harder it can be to get out. If your pet still manages to leave more stains in the future, don't worry. With the right techniques, you'll be able to get them out in no time.
