Cashmere is a luxurious fabric that is prized for its softness and warmth. It can also be pretty expensive, making it all the more important that you know how to protect it from pet stains. Even if you manage to catch the stain early, don’t panic: with the proper steps, you can minimize or even completely remove pet stains from cashmere.

Step one: Blot the stain

The best way to deal with a pet stain on cashmere is to act quickly. Using a clean white towel, gently blot away any excess moisture from the stain. Don’t rub, as this could further damage the fabric. If the stain has already dried, try gently scratching the affected area with a spoon or other blunt object.

Step two: Dilute the stain

Mix one cup of warm water with a teaspoon of mild dish soap. Dip a cloth in solution and dab it over stain. Do not scrub or rub the cloth; instead, just gently blot the spot until the liquid is absorbed into the fabric. Be sure to use a mild detergent, as harsh ones could damage the delicate fibers of the cashmere.

Step three: Rinse the fabric

Rinse fabric by gently running lukewarm water over the stained area. Use a paper towel to gently press the fabric and absorb moisture. Repeat this process until the fabric is no longer soapy.

Step four: Soak the fabric

Fill a sink or basin with cool water and add a few drops of mild detergent. Soak cashmere garment in the water for at least 30 minutes. This step helps to loosen the stain and make it easier to remove. Be sure to check on the stain regularly and move the fabric around to ensure all areas are exposed to the soapy solution.

Step five: Wash fabric

Once the fabric has been soaked, wash it according to the specific instructions on the label. Be sure to use a gentle detergent. If possible, use a front-loading washing machine or a delicate cycle. Air-dry the cashmere garment or lay it flat on a towel after washing.

Step six: Check for remaining stains

Once the fabric has been washed and dried, check the area for any remaining stains. If there are any, repeat steps three through five until the stain is completely removed.
