The first step in removing perspiration stains from wool garments is to rinse the garment with cold water. This helps to dilute the sweat and free any trapped particles. While cold tap water will do, it may be more effective to use a mixture of white vinegar and cold water. To do this, mix one part white vinegar to three parts of cold water. This solution helps to release any detergent or dirt which may have been trapped in the fibers of the wool.
Once the garment has been rinsed with water, you can use a gentle laundry detergent to spot clean the stained area. Try to use a detergent which is specifically designed for use on delicate fabrics such as wool. It's also important to test the detergent on an inconspicuous area of the garment prior to treating the stained area. This will help ensure that detergent does not damage the fabric.
After spot cleaning the perspiration stain, soak the garment in a solution of Borax and water. Borax is a natural mineral which helps to whiten fabrics and remove stubborn stains. To make the solution, mix one tablespoon of Borax with two cups of warm water. Allow the wool garment to soak in the solution for at least thirty minutes before rinsing with cold water. This step should help to lift perspiration stains from the fabric.
Once you have allowed the garment to soak, you should rinse it again with cold water. Using a clean cloth, blot the area to remove any remaining perspiration stains. You may need to repeat this step multiple times until all traces of sweat mark have been removed. Finally, allow garment to dry in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight.
