Whether it’s a sofa or a shirt, velvet–a luxurious fabric made of silk and wool–is renowned for its softness and shine. Unfortunately, this smooth texture can quickly become stained, especially when exposed to moisture and sweat.
To ensure that velvet items are not damaged while being cleaned, it is essential to use the proper cleaning techniques and materials. Here are three easy steps to help you tackle perspiration stains on velvet.
Before cleaning the stain, blot (not rub) any excess sweat or moisture with a soft, white cloth or paper towel. This will help to absorb any liquid before the area is exposed to further cleaning.
Create a gentle cleaning mixture, using a mild detergent and warm water. Mix together one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid, one cup of warm water, and one tablespoon of white vinegar. Stir until blended.
Using a soft cloth or sponge, dip the cloth into the cleaning solution and gently pat at the stain in a circular motion. Blot the area with a dry cloth after the area is clean to avoid over-wetting the fabric. Allow the velvet item to air dry.
