Pre-Treating Perspiration Stains

The first step to removing perspiration stains is pre-treating fabric. For fabrics that can be machine washed, mix a teaspoon of liquid detergent with two cups of cold water. Apply a small amount of this mixture to the stained area and gently agitate it in with your fingers. Allow the mixture to sit on the stain for about 10 minutes, then rinse with cold water. If the fabric cannot be machine washed, apply a few drops of the detergent mixture to the stain and gently massage it in. Again, let sit for 10 minutes, then rinse with cold water.

Washing the Garment

Once the pre-treatment is complete, the garment should be washed according to the directions provided on the care label. Be sure to use a mild detergent that is specifically designed for delicate fabrics. For heavily soiled garments, additional detergent may need to be added to the machine. Add a teaspoon of white vinegar to the wash cycle to help break down any residue that may remain after pre-treating.

Drying the Garment

The garment should not be dried in dryer until the stain has been completely removed. Air drying is best, as high heat can cause the remaining stain to set. If the stain is still present after air drying, repeat the steps above and try again.

Preventing Future Stains

It's best to always wear clothing made of natural fabrics when wearing traditional dress. Natural fabrics such as cotton, linen and silk are more breathable than synthetic fabrics and help to keep perspiration at bay. Additionally, it's important to choose a detergent that is designed for delicate fabrics and use it sparingly. Too much detergent can leave a residue on the fabric that can eventually lead to perspiration stains.
