What You Need to Know About Sweat Stains

Sweat stains on clothing tend to be yellow or brown in color and are caused by proteins and salts present in perspiration, as well as skin oils or lotions. The longer they go untreated, the harder it becomes to remove the stains. The best way to deal with sweat stains is to prevent them from happening in the first place.

Preventive Measures

  • Use laundry detergent that contains enzymes.
  • Launder items as soon as you notice spots or odors.
  • Apply a stain remover to the underarms of your sweaters prior to washing.
  • Don’t use too much detergent, because more detergent won’t make your clothes cleaner; it will just leave residue behind.
  • If you have extra sweaty pits, use an antiperspirant or deodorant before putting on your sweaters.

Cleaning Sweat Stains from Sweaters

  1. Lay your sweater flat and allow it to air-dry for 10 minutes. This will help get rid of some of the dampness and make the stain easier to treat.
  2. Mix equal parts baking soda and water to create a paste. Make sure the paste isn't too thick or thin.
  3. Using a rag or toothbrush, gently rub the paste onto the stain in a circular motion. If the stain is particularly stubborn, add a bit of liquid laundry detergent. Allow the paste to sit on the stain for 20 minutes.
  4. Rinse the stain with cool water and gently rub the fabric together. You may need to repeat this process a few times if the stain is persistent.
  5. After rinsing the paste off, launder the item as you normally would. You can also add a scoop of baking soda to the wash cycle to help break down any remaining sweat stains.

Removing Set-In Stains

If the stain has become set-in, you can still take steps to remove it. Start by soaking the stained area in a mixture of warm water and white vinegar for 30 minutes. Then, apply a pre-wash stain remover directly onto the stain and let it sit for 15 minutes. Finally, wash the garment according to the instructions on the clothing tag.
