Why Do We Sweat?

Perspiration is the body’s natural way of regulating temperature. When the body gets too hot, the sweat glands produce fluids which cool off the body as they evaporate off the skin. Some people may experience more intense sweating while sleeping due to medical conditions like hyperhidrosis or stress.

Materials You'll Need to Remove Sweat Stains

  • Laundry detergent or liquid soap
  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • A toothbrush

Steps to Cleaning Sweat Stains from Sleepwear

  1. Check the care label on your PJs for specific cleaning instructions. Pre-treat any stains with a dab of laundry detergent or liquid soap before washing.
  2. Put your sleepwear in the washing machine with warm water. Add a cup of white vinegar to the load to help remove odors.
  3. Once the cycle has finished, inspect your PJs for any remaining sweat stains. If you can still see marks, mix a paste of baking soda and water. Use a toothbrush to gently scrub the affected area.
  4. Rinse the item with cool water and repeat the process, if necessary. Once you’ve removed the stain, add a small amount of rubbing alcohol. This will help to cut out any remaining odor.
  5. Allow your PJs to air dry and then check again for any stains. Repeat the steps, if needed.

Tips for Minimizing Perspiration Stains on Sleepwear

  • Opt for natural fabrics like cotton or linen which allow your skin to breathe and absorb moisture.
  • Wash new sleepwear before wearing to remove any lingering odors.
  • Air out your sleepwear between wearings.
  • Use an antiperspirant or deodorant before bed. Keep a towel handy to wipe off any excess sweat during the night.
