Step 1: Determine Level of Soiling

Inspect fabric for any loose particles, dry soil or perspiration. If the residue is still dry, gently brush it off with a clothes brush before proceeding to the next steps.

Step 2: Pre-treat with Stain Remover Spray

For light or moderate perspiration staining, spray on a quality stain remover and let it sit for 10 minutes. Working from reverse side of the fabric, lightly dab the area with a damp cloth to lift out the fabric's natural oils that may have combined with the stain.

Step 3: Soak in Cool Water and Detergent

Fill a basin with cool water and add a mild detergent designed for delicate fabrics. Gently submerge garment and allow it to soak for up to 30 minutes. Agitate it periodically with your hands to help release stain.

Step 4: Rinse the Garment Thoroughly

Rinse garment thoroughly in cool water. To avoid shrinkage, never wring or twist the fabric while washing.

Step 5: Air Dry

Lay the garment flat to dry on a towel. Place a second (dry) towel over the garment's stained area and press firmly. This helps to absorb the moisture more quickly.

Additional Tips

  • Always test stain remover spray on an inconspicuous area, such as the seam or lining of the garment, to ensure there won't be any adverse reaction.
  • Wash silk tussah separately from other fabrics to avoid snags and pilling.
  • Never use chlorine bleach on silk tussah.
