Step 1: Treat the Stain Immediately

Spot treating the stain as soon as possible is the best way to avoid a deeper more difficult-to-remove stain. If the fabric is still damp, start by blotting the excess moisture with a cloth or paper towel. If the stain has already dried, dampen the area with a clean cloth soaked in cool water. Gently dab and press the cloth onto the spot to moisten it. Do not rub, as this can spread the stain.

Step 2: Use a Mild Detergent

Choose a mild detergent, such as Woolite or one specifically formulated for delicate fabrics, like Ivory Snow Liquid Detergent. Apply a small amount directly to the spot, making sure to avoid the rest of the garment. Work the detergent into fibers using your fingers. If the area is still wet, you can also add a small amount of ammonia to the detergent. Leave it to soak for five to ten minutes.

Step 3: Rinse Thoroughly

Using cold water, rinse clothing thoroughly to remove all traces of detergent, then press the fabric between two towels to absorb as much of the moisture as possible. Hang garment up to air dry away from direct sunlight. Once it’s completely dry, check the area for any remaining stain before laundering the garment as normal.
