Before attempting to clean perspiration stains from silk dupioni, test a small, hidden area of the fabric for colorfastness to ensure it will not discolor or bleed when wet. To do this, mix a small amount of liquid laundry detergent with a few tablespoons of water and lightly dab the mixture onto the fabric. Allow it to sit for one minute then rinse with cool water. If there is no discoloration, proceed with stain removal.
Using a mild detergent, such as dish soap, create a sudsy solution and apply directly onto the perspiration stain. Gently massage the suds into the area using your fingers, then allow the solution to remain on fabric for 10 minutes. Rinse off any remaining detergent with cool water before proceeding to the next step.
Mix one tablespoon of ammonia with one cup of cold water, and use this solution to rinse the affected area. Be sure to rinse thoroughly, and don’t leave any residue behind. Repeat this step several times until all traces of the stain are gone.
Mix one tablespoon of oxygen bleach with one gallon of cold water. Submerge fabric in the mixture and soak for at least 30 minutes, or up to four hours if necessary. Once finished, rinse the fabric thoroughly with cool water.
Hang the fabric up to air dry. Do not put it in the dryer, as heat will set stain and make it much harder to remove. You may want to check the fabric in between hangings to make sure the stain is completely gone.
By following these five steps you can easily remove perspiration stains from silk dupioni fabric. Always be sure to test the fabric for colorfastness before treatment, and follow up with the final two steps of rinsing and drying for best results.
