Understand which type of fabric your shift dress is made from before attempting to clean it. This will determine the type of detergent, stain remover, or other cleaning agent you use to eliminate the sweat stain. Common fabrics used to make shift dresses include polyester, nylon, cotton, silk, chiffon, and wool.
Mix a few drops of detergent with two cups of cool water to create a basic cleaning solution. If the fabric is more delicate, add a few drops of vinegar to the mix. Test the solution on a small, hidden part of the dress before applying it to stain, ensuring it won’t affect the color of the material. Blot the area gently with a soft cloth or sponge before moving to the next step.
In a bowl, mix one part detergent to two parts baking soda. You can also add a few drops of vinegar to the mixture for extra cleaning power. Apply the paste to stained area and let it sit for approximately five minutes before rinsing. Use cold running water to rinse off the paste, and pat gently with a dry cloth.
After treating the perspiration stain, it is important to wash entire shift dress, so all residues are removed. Add the appropriate amount of detergent to your washing machine, and if desired, a few drops of fabric softener. Select the proper water temperature according to the type of fabric, and set the machine to a short cycle. Once the cycle is complete, hang up your dress to air dry.
