Gather Supplies

You'll need a few items to tackle sweaty stains on your favorite polo shirt:

  • Borax
  • Plain white vinegar
  • Dish soap
  • Old toothbrush
  • Clean cloths (for blotting)

Pretreat with Borax

Borax is a natural laundry booster that helps get the stain-fighting juices going before laundering. To make a Borax treatment, just combine one part borax with two parts water and stir until dissolved. Then, dip an old toothbrush into the mixture and scrub affected areas of the polo shirt. Let the garment sit for several minutes before laundering.

Blot with Vinegar and Soap

If perspiration stains are particularly set in or greasy, make a cleaning solution of ½ teaspoon liquid dish soap and 1 cup white vinegar. Dip a clean cloth into the mixture, and then blot at the stained area of the polo shirt. Continue blotting until the stain has been lifted.

Launder Immediately

Once the stains have been treated, launder the polo shirt as soon as possible. If you prefer, you can also opt for dry cleaning if it is a delicate fabric.
