What Causes Perspiration Stains?

Perspiration stains are caused by the salt and oils in sweat that mix with the dye in fabric. The result is an unsightly yellow or brown-colored stain. These stains can be particularly stubborn if the garment isn’t treated quickly.

Pre-Treat Lite Stains

For mild perspiration stains, you can try pre-treating them with a bit of dishwashing liquid or laundry detergent. Put a small amount of detergent directly onto the stain and rub it in gently. Allow it to sit for about 10 minutes before laundering as usual.

Use an Oxi Stain Remover

If the pre-treating doesn’t work, try using an oxi stain remover like OxiClean. These products contain powerful cleaning agents that work to break down stain molecules and get rid of persistent discoloration. Add a scoop to a load of laundry during the wash cycle for best results.

Cool Wash Cycles and Gentle Detergents

When laundering a midi dress with a perspiration stain, make sure to use cool water and a gentle detergent. Hot water and harsh detergents may set the stain rather than removing it. You can also add baking soda or white vinegar to the load for extra stain fighting power.

Use Boiling Water for Stubborn Stains

If the stain still won’t budge, try boiling garment in hot water. Fill a pot with enough water to cover the dress and bring it to a boil. Once the water is boiling, lower the dress into the water and reduce the heat. Boil the dress for 15 minutes, then rinse and launder as usual.
