Perspiration stains are caused by sweat and body oils reacting with fabric of your jacket. Removing them requires removing the discoloration that has been created and neutralizing any odors.
Steps to Cleaning Perspiration Stains from Jackets
- Pre-treat the stained area: Soak a washcloth in a mixture of cold water and laundry detergent, then use it to blot the stain. This will help to loosen the stain prior to washing.
- Hand wash jacket: Fill a sink or large bucket with cold water and add a small amount of laundry detergent or shampoo. Place the jacket into the water and soak it for 15 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly: After soaking the jacket, drain the soapy water and rinse the jacket with cold water until all of the soap is removed.
- Wash on delicate in the washing machine: Place the jacket in a washing machine with a mild detergent and set to a delicate cycle. Add an oxygen bleach such as OxiClean, if desired.
- Air dry: After washing, let your jacket air dry. Do not place it in the dryer.
