Converse are a timeless and comfortable shoe option. But, let’s face it, keeping them looking new can be tough — especially when trying to get rid of perspiration stains. Whether it's from walking around in the hot summer sun or working up a sweat while playing sports, preventing and removing perspiration stains is possible.

How to Prevent Sweat Marks on Converse

The best way to avoid sweating through your sneakers is to try and keep your feet cool. To do this, always wear breathable socks — preferably made of a moisture-wicking material like cotton or wool. You can also apply an absorbent powder like talc to reduce sweating. Finally, if possible, choose lighter colors of Converse. Darker colors absorb more heat and can lead to perspiration stains.

Cleaning Mild Perspiration Stains on Converse

If you already have some light sweat stains, there are a few simple steps you can take to clean them. First, wipe the stain with a paper towel and then with a damp cloth. If that doesn't work, dab the area with a mixture of one part white vinegar and two parts warm water. After that, rub in a few drops of liquid laundry detergent and rinse with warm water. Finish by patting the area dry with a towel.

Removing Tough Perspiration Stains From Converse

The above method should work for most light perspiration stains, but if the stains are a bit tougher, following steps may be helpful. Start by mixing one part baking soda with one part warm water and scrubbing the stain with a soft bristled brush. If the stain still isn’t coming out, opt for a stronger solution. Mix one part diluted bleach with three parts warm water and use a soft-bristled brush to scrub the stain. Be sure to ventilate the area as you work.

Preventing Future Perspiration Stains on Converse

Once you’ve gotten rid of those pesky sweat stains, make sure you take steps to prevent them from returning. First, make sure your shoes are properly sized so your feet don’t get too warm and sweaty. Additionally, try to avoid wearing your Converse in extremely hot weather. Finally, treat your shoes with protectant products when you first get them to help prevent staining in the future.
