The first step towards getting rid of perspiration stains is to determine the type of fabric the coat is made of. Different fabrics require different cleaning methods, so it is important to know which one you have before you start the process. Check the care label to identify the fabric type.
Once you have identified the fabric type, it is time to pre-treat the stain. For most fabrics, you can use a liquid laundry detergent or a mild stain remover. Apply the product directly to the stain and let it sit for 15 minutes. After that, lightly rub the fabric with a clean cloth to work the solution into the fibers of the fabric. Once you are done, rinse out the solution with lukewarm water.
The next step is to wash the coat in the washing machine. Set the machine to gentle cycle and wash the coat separately from other clothing. You should also use a mild detergent and cold water. Add a cup of white vinegar to wash cycle to help remove any lingering odors. Once it's done, hang coat up to dry.
There are some additional steps that need to be taken for certain fabrics when removing perspiration stains. For silk, wool, and cashmere, you will need to soak the coat in a sink filled with cold water and a capful of gentle detergent. Let the coat soak for 20 minutes, then rinse it in cool water and lay it flat to dry. For leather or suede, dilute a small amount of laundry detergent in water, then use a soft sponge to apply the solution. Next, rinse with cold water and let the coat air dry away from direct sunlight. Make sure to condition the material after cleaning.
