Since charmeuse is a delicate fabric, it’s important to take special care when cleaning. Before attempting to clean right away, use a terry cloth towel to blot the stain from the fabric. To make sure the stain doesn’t spread further, pat the area around the stain until it is no longer visible. Do not rub or wipe the stain—this could cause the stain to eventually set in.
Once the area is blotted, use a mild detergent to create a sudsy mixture. Saturate a clean sponge in the mixture and then gently dab at the stain. Make sure to dab and not scrub, as this will help preserve the delicate fabric of the charmeuse. Additionally, using cold water instead of hot water is key to preventing the stain from setting in.
If the stain is still present after dabbing at it, you may need additional intervention. Use a small amount of white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide to pre-treat the area. Make sure to spot test first before applying the vinegar or peroxide to the entire stained area. Leave the solution on for about an hour, then rinse it out with cold water. Again, be sure not to rub or scrub the fabric so that the delicate fibers of the charmeuse are not damaged.
After area has been pre-treated, launder the item as usual with cold water. After drying, take a close look at the stained area to ensure that the stain has been completely removed. If the stain is still there, repeat pre-treatment as necessary until the stain is gone.
