The first step is to gently blot the stain with a white cloth or paper towel. Remove as much of the sweat as possible by pressing against fabric. Do not rub or scrub at the stain, as this can damage the material. If you’re dealing with a large or challenging stain, try laying the item flat and sprinkling some cornstarch over it. Let it sit for a few hours and then brush off the powder.
Once you’ve removed as much of the sweat as possible, pre-treating the stain is next step. Fill your sink with lukewarm water and mix in a few drops of mild detergent (preferably something that’s designed for cleaning delicates). Let the cashmere item soak in the mixture for 10-15 minutes. Then, rinse with cold water.
Now it’s time to wash the item. Do so by hand, using a delicate cycle in the washing machine, or even better, send it to the dry cleaner. Make sure the water temperature you use is lukewarm, as hot water can damage the fabric. Also, avoid laundering cashmere with other items, as the fibers can get rubbed against each other and cause pilling. Once you’re done, lay the item flat on a towel and let it air dry.
If all else fails, it may be time to call in a professional. A dry cleaner can help you tackle challenging perspiration stains on your cashmere items that regular laundering can’t handle.
