Calico is a medium weight cotton fabric made of printed small checks or plaids. Popular for making clothing, quilts and craft projects, calico's soft texture can make it vulnerable to sweat stains in areas that come into contact with skin. If you find yourself with a perspiration-stained calico garment or project, don't panic - just follow these steps for removal:
The key to removing many set-in stains is to treat them as soon as possible. Wipe off any excess sweat and then soak the stained area in cold water for at least 15 minutes. This will help to loosen the stain and make it easier to remove.
After the stain has been soaked, gently scrub the area with a stain remover or laundry detergent. Let the product sit on the stain for at least five minutes, and then rinse the area with cool water.
Follow the garment's care instructions and machine wash item separately on a cool setting. Use a color-safe bleach in the washing machine if stain is still visible. You can also add a ½ cup of white vinegar to the wash cycle. This helps to neutralize the sweat odor and remove any remaining stain residue.
To avoid further setting the stain, hang dry the calico garment instead of putting it in the dryer. Once the item is dry, consider spraying the area with a stain repellent spray or applying a liquid fabric softener.
With just a few simple steps, you can easily remove perspiration stains from calico fabric. Keep these tips handy the next time you find yourself dealing with a sweat-stained garment or project.
