The most important step of cleaning a pencil stain off of a necktie is to figure out what kind of material it is made out of. Different materials require different approaches to cleaning, so knowing exact material can help you determine how to treat the stain. It’s best to check the tie’s label if possible.
Once you’ve determined the material of the tie, place the tie on a flat surface or hold it in your hands. If you’re using a flat surface, lay down an old cloth or towel to protect it from any cleaning agent you use.
The next step is to clean the stained area. For most materials (such as polyester and silk) you can use a dry-cleaning solvent, but it’s always best to test it on an inconspicuous part of the tie before applying it to the stained area.
If the tie is made of wool, you can use a damp cloth to remove the stain. But if stain is more stubborn, you can use a diluted solution of mild detergent and warm water. Just be sure to rinse off the detergent thoroughly after cleaning the area.
After the stain has been removed, you can let the tie air dry or use a hairdryer on a low setting to speed up the process. However you decide to dry it, make sure you hang it in a cool, dry area. Doing this will ensure that your tie is fresh, clean and ready for another day!
