Tartan is a traditional fabric with a distinctive pattern, used to make everything from kilts to curtains. It adds a touch of classic style to any room, but unfortunately it can be difficult to clean properly. Pencil stains can seem like a daunting task to remove, but with the right cleaning technique and a bit of elbow grease, you'll have your tartan looking as good as new in no time.

Using a clean, white cloth, gently blot at the stain to remove any excess pencil lead. Don’t scrub or rub at the fabric as this could make the stain worse.
Mix a solution of warm water and mild detergent, such as washing up liquid. You should use enough detergent to make a light sudsy mixture. Do not use bleach or any harsh chemical cleaners as these could damage the fabric.
Using a clean cloth, lightly dab the cleaning solution onto the stain. Do not rub or scrub as this could cause the stain to spread. Be careful not to get the solution on the surrounding fabric as it could cause discoloration.
Rinse the stained area with warm water to remove the detergent. Once rinsed, blot the area with a clean, white cloth to remove any excess moisture. Hang the item up to dry, then check for any remaining stains once it has dried.
