What You'll Need

  • Mild detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Soft cloth

Step 1: Pretreat Stain

Start by applying a pretreatment to loosen the pencil stain before washing. To do this, mix one tablespoon of mild detergent with two tablespoons of white vinegar. Then, apply the mixture directly onto the stained area, gently rubbing it in with a soft cloth.

Step 2: Machine Wash

Once you've pretreated the area, it's time to throw your swim trunks into the washing machine. Be sure to use a cold and gentle cycle, and don't forget to add a normal dose of laundry detergent. After the wash is complete, check the stained area to determine if additional treatment is needed.

Step 3: Repeat as Necessary

If the stain is still visible after the first wash, repeat steps one and two until issue is completely resolved. Be sure to use a minimal amount of detergent each time, as too much detergent can lead to over-sudsing and can make the stain more difficult to remove.

Step 4: Air Dry or Tumble Dry

Once the stain has been removed, the last step is to hang dry the swim trunks or put them in dryer on a low setting. Do not use high heat as this can set the stain, making it nearly impossible to remove.
