Start by pre-treating the stain with laundry detergent and warm water. Begin by mixing one teaspoon of liquid detergent into 1/4 cup of warm water. Using a clean cloth, dab the mixture onto the stain until it is saturated. Let it sit for at least five minutes before moving on to next step.
After pre-treating the stain, the stockings should be soaked for at least 30 minutes. Fill a sink or bucket with lukewarm water and one tablespoon of liquid laundry detergent, then submerge the stockings into the mixture. While the stockings are soaking, gently agitate them every few minutes to help release the pencil stain.
Once the stockings have had a chance to soak, you can begin scrubbing the stain with a soft-bristled brush. Start by lightly brushing the stain, then increase pressure as needed until the pencil marks are removed. It's important to use only gentle pressure when scrubbing to avoid damaging the fabric.
When the stain has been removed, rinse the stockings with cold water to remove any remaining detergent residue. Avoid using hot water, as it can cause the pencil marks to set deeper into fabric.
Once the stockings have been rinsed, lay them flat on a towel or hang them up to air dry. Do not put them in the dryer or iron them until you are sure the stains have been completely removed.
