Pencil marks on silk shantung can be a nuisance, but fortunately they do not have to mean the end of your garment. All you need is a little know-how and some common household items.

What You'll Need

  • White vinegar
  • A clean towel
  • Salt
  • Iron (optional)

Before you begin, make sure that the garments are cleaned and free of dirt and other debris. This will help make stain removal process easier.

Step 1: Soak the Stain with Vinegar and Salt

Mix together two parts white vinegar with one part salt in a bowl. Take a clean towel and soak it in the mixture. This will help to loosen the stain. Place the towel on the stain and let it sit for 10 minutes.

Step 2: Rub Stain with a Towel

Once the towel has been soaked in the vinegar and salt mixture, use it to gently rub stain. This should help to loosen and remove the pencil marks. Do not scrub too hard or you risk damaging the fabric.

Step 3: Rinse with Cold Water

Once stain has been removed, rinse the area with cold water. This will help to remove any remaining traces of the stain.

Step 4: Iron (Optional)

If the stain is still visible after the first three steps, you can try ironing the area. Place a clean cloth over the stain and press the iron down for a few seconds. This should help remove any remaining pencil marks.

Tips and Tricks

  • Always test the salt and vinegar mixture on a hidden area of fabric first to make sure it won't damage the material.
  • If stain is still visible after all of the above steps, you can try using a stain remover for silk fabrics.
  • Make sure to launder the garment after the stain has been removed.
