To make sure you don't destroy your silk dupioni fabric in the cleaning process, test it first. Put a few drops of dry-cleaning solvent on a hidden seam or corner, and leave it for several minutes. Then, lightly dab the area with a white cotton cloth. If the color streaks or comes off, find a professional dry cleaner who can safely clean your fabric.
Using a soft-bristle toothbrush, gently scrub the stained area in a circular motion. Be sure not to rub too hard, as that could damage the fabric. This should help loosen the stain and make it easier to remove.
If the stain still remains after scrubbing, use a dry-cleaning solvent to remove it. Apply a small amount of solvent to a white cloth and dab the stain. As with testing phase, never rub cloth back and forth against the fabric – instead, blot it gently until the stain has been removed.
Once the stain is gone, mix a light solution of Woolite™ or a similar product made for delicate fabrics and warm water. Soak a white cloth in the solution and then wring it out. Gently dab soaked cloth on the cleaned area of the fabric. When done, allow the fabric to air dry.
Once dry, turn the fabric over so the correct side is facing up. Iron the fabric using a low setting to seal in solvent and stain removal.
If the stain is still visible, repeat steps 2 to 5 again until the stain is removed.
Apply an invisible fabric protector to the cleaned area. This will help prevent future stains and keep the fabric in good condition.
Leave the fabric to air dry completely before hanging or wearing.
