What Causes Pencil Stains on Rayon?

Pencil marks are caused by graphite, which is the same material found in lead pencils. It transfers to rayon when you press too firmly with a pencil. This can occur when taking notes, notes, doing artwork, or even writing down measurements. If left untreated for long, the graphite can become embedded in the fibers of the fabric, which makes it difficult to remove.

How To Clean Pencil Stains from Rayon

There are several methods that can be used to remove pencil marks from rayon. You should always test these methods on a small inconspicuous area first to see if the fabric is colorfast.

  • Eraser: A kneaded eraser works best for this task. Gently rub the eraser over the pencil mark until it has been removed.
  • Vinegar: Mix white vinegar with warm water and apply to the stain. Allow it to sit for several minutes then rinse off with cold water.
  • Rubbing Alcohol: Apply rubbing alcohol directly to the stain and use a soft cloth to gently rub it in. Rinse with cold water when finished.
  • Dry Cleaning Solvent: Apply a dry cleaning solvent to the stain and allow it to sit for a few minutes. Wipe it off with a clean cloth. Do not rinse with water.
  • Laundry Detergent: Create a paste with laundry detergent and water and apply to the stain. Allow it to sit for several minutes before rinsing off with cold water. Repeat if necessary.

Preventing Pencil Stains on Rayon

The simplest way to prevent pencil stains on rayon is to avoid using pencils entirely. However, if you must use them, make sure you press lightly. Also, if you're taking measurements with a pencil, make sure to write them down on a separate piece of paper before transferring them to the fabric.
