Removing Pencil Stains from Pullovers With Detergent

If the pencil stain on your pullover is fresh, start by gently scraping off any excess lead with a blunt knife or spoon. Next, dampen a washcloth with cold water and gently dab at the area, being careful not to spread the stain. Once you’ve done this, apply a bit of liquid detergent directly to the stained area and let it sit for 10 minutes.

After the 10 minutes is up, gently scrub the area with a clean, soft toothbrush. Afterward, rinse away the detergent with cold water and repeat the process until the stain is gone. Be sure to inspect the area when you're finished to make sure no trace of stain remains.

Using Nail Polish Remover to Remove Pencil Stains

If the pencil stain on your pullover is stubborn, try using nail polish remover. Start by diluting remover with a small amount of water and then blotting the stain with a cotton ball soaked in mixture. Let the mixture sit on stain for several minutes before gently scrubbing the area with a soft toothbrush. Be sure to be gentle since nail polish remover can easily damage delicate fabrics.

Once you’ve finished scrubbing, rinse the area with cold water and then launder your pullover as usual. To avoid further damage, use gentlest cycle on your washing machine and the coolest water temperature available.

Preventing Pencil Stains on Pullovers

The best way to ensure that you don’t have to deal with pencil stains on your pullovers is to prevent them in the first place. The easiest way to do this is to keep all writing utensils out of reach while you’re wearing your sweater. It’s also a good idea to take off your pullover right away if you notice that a pencil or pen has been left in a pocket.
