Identifying the type of stain can help determine the best cleaning approach. Wax-based pencils such as crayons will require different materials and techniques than those used for graphite pencils. If the stain is wax-based, further steps may include using a heat dryer, a hot iron, and/or a chemical cleaner like Goo Gone.
Once the type of stain is determined, allow a pre-treatment solution to soak into the fabric for at least 10 minutes. Use a liquid detergent or a pre-treat spray designed to break down stubborn stains.
After the pre-treatment solution has been given enough time to work, launder the fabric in hot water, either in washing machine or by hand. If the stain persists, repeat the process.
When laundering is complete, air dry fabric. Do not put fabric with a stain in the dryer, as heat setting will set the stain. To ensure the stain has been completely removed, inspect the fabric before fully drying.
