Before doing anything else, remove as much of excess pencil lead as possible. This can be done using a soft-bristled brush, such as a toothbrush, to gently brush away any loose particles. Avoid using a hard-bristled brush, as this could cause further damage to the fabric.
Once the loose pencil lead has been removed, use a spot cleaner specifically formulated for fabrics. Follow package directions when applying the cleaner, and be sure to test it on a hidden area of the garment first. After treating the stain, allow cleaner to sit on the fabric for several minutes as recommended.
Once the spot cleaner has had time to set, rinse the area with cold water. For tougher stains, use a soft brush or cloth to gently scrub the area. Be sure to avoid using any harsh abrasive cleaners, as this could cause further damage.
If spot cleaner and cold water rinse do not work, try a paste cleaner. Make a paste mixture with equal parts baking soda and water, or try a paste cleaner specifically formulated for fabrics. Dab a small amount of paste onto the stain and allow it to sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Then, rinse the area with cold water. Avoid using hot water, as this could cause the stain to set permanently.
Club soda is another option to try if the stain persists. Saturate the area with club soda, and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Then, gently rub the stain using a soft cloth or brush. Rinse the fabric with cold water, and repeat if necessary.
Once the stain has been removed, be sure to wring out excess moisture and air dry the fabric. Do not place the fabric in dryer, as the heat from the machine could cause stain to set permanently. The fabric should also be washed gently with cold water and mild detergent afterwards.
