No one wants to walk around wearing a stained Hanbok, and sadly, pencils can often leave dark, difficult-to-remove stains on fabric. The good news is that the stains aren’t impossible to get rid of. With right cleaning products and techniques, you can restore your Hanbok to its former beauty and keep it from looking dull and dingy.

Removing Pencil Stains with an Eraser

Your first option for removing pencil stains from your Hanbok is to use an eraser. A soft eraser is usually enough to rub out fresh pencil marks with minimal effort. Use gentle strokes and take your time, as fabric of Hanbok can be delicate. If stain doesn’t come out fully with just an eraser, move on to the next step.

Using Rubbing Alcohol to Lift Stains

If an eraser isn't enough, try using rubbing alcohol to lift the stain. Saturate a cotton ball or tissue with rubbing alcohol and press firmly against stain until it lifts away. Rubbing alcohol is a great remover of stains, but make sure to test it in an inconspicuous place before using it on the entire garment.

Treating Stains with Dishwashing Liquid

Dishwashing liquid can also work wonders at lifting pencil stains from Hanbok. Mix a small amount of dishwashing liquid with water, then apply directly to the stain. Rub the mixture gently into the stain before rinsing with lukewarm water. Repeat process as necessary until the stain fades.

Hand Washing Your Hanbok

After trying the above methods, if the stain still won’t budge, hand wash your Hanbok to get rid of the pencil marks for good. Fill a container with lukewarm water and a few drops of detergent or dish soap, then submerge your Hanbok in the mixture. Let it soak for an hour or two, then rinse with cold water to remove any remaining soap. Hang your Hanbok to dry, and you’ll be ready to wear your freshly-cleaned garment with pride once again.
