Garters are a great accessory for special occasions and for everyday wear. Whether you're wearing them for prom or for your wedding day, you want your garters looking their best. But sometimes, pencil marks can find their way on your garter and ruin the effect. Luckily, there are a few steps you can take to get rid of the pencil marks and restore your garter.

Step 1: Blot the Stain

The first step is to treat the stained area as soon as possible. Using a clean white cloth, gently blot the stain to remove any excess graphite. Do not rub the stained area as it may spread the stain further.

Step 2: Apply a Cleaning Solution

Next, make a light cleaning solution with a mild detergent and cool water. Apply the cleaning solution to a clean cloth and gently blot stained area. Do not scrub fabric as this may cause damage to delicate fibers of your garter.

Step 3: Rinse the Stain

Once you have applied the cleaning solution, rinse the stained area with a damp cloth. This will help to remove any remaining cleaning solution from the fabric and help to lessen the stain.

Step 4: Test a Small Area for Colorfastness

Before applying any more cleaning solutions, it is important to test a small, hidden area of garter for colorfastness. To do this, apply a small amount of the cleaning solution to an area of the garter that is not visible when worn. If area becomes discolored, do not proceed with more cleaning.

Step 5: Use a Solvent-Based Stain Remover

If the area has passed the colorfastness test, the next step is to use a solvent-based stain remover. Make sure to read label and directions carefully before using, as using the wrong product or using too much of it, can cause permanent damage to your garter. Again, use a clean cloth to apply the stain remover and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing with water.

Step 6: Allow the Garter to Air-Dry

Once stain is removed, it is important to allow your garter to air-dry rather than using a towel or a blow-dryer. Doing so will help to prevent the fabric from becoming stiff. After the garter is dry, it can then be inspected for any remaining stains.
