Before you begin cleaning, try to identify what kind of stain it is. If the stain appears to be oily or waxy (like a pencil stain), then use a dry-cleaning solvent. Otherwise, use a mild detergent mixed with warm water to clean the fabric.
Once you've identified the stain, pre-treat it with a dry-cleaning solvent or detergent solution to help loosen it up. For more stubborn stains, you may need to rub a little extra elbow grease to get it out.
Once the stain has been pre-treated, machine wash the flannel with a mild detergent in cold water. If the fabric isn't too delicate, you can also use hot water. The heat will help break up the stain and make it easier to remove.
When washing is complete, air dry the flannel in a warm place away from direct sunlight. Do not use a dryer as this could set the stain and make it more difficult to remove.
If the stain is still present after machine washing and air drying, repeat steps 2-4 until the stain is gone. You may also want to consider spot-treating the area with a stain remover before machine washing again.
