Before attempting to remove the pencil stain, it’s important to inspect your cotton poplin fabric to make sure there are no existing weak spots or holes that could be damaged by the cleaning process. If any of these are present, stop and take item to a professional dry cleaner instead.
Using a clean white cloth, carefully blot up any excess pencil marks from fabric. Make sure not to rub or scrub the fabric, as this will only spread the stain further.
To help loosen up the pencil stain, spray the affected area with a pre-spot treatment made specifically for removing water-based stains. Let it sit for 30 minutes to give it time to work its magic.
Fill a sink or bucket up with lukewarm water and add a small amount of liquid laundry detergent. Submerge the stained area of fabric and let it soak for 15-20 minutes. This will help to further loosen and remove the pencil stain.
After the fabric has soaked, rinse it off with clean water and inspect it to see if stain has been completely removed. If it is still visible, repeat steps 3-5 until the stain is gone.
Once stain has been removed, hang the item up to air dry. Doing so will not only prevent shrinkage, but also help to avoid insects or mold from growing on and damaging the fabric.
To prevent pencil marks from staining your cotton poplin fabric in future, avoid storing items like pens and pencils in pockets or other close proximity to fabric.
