The best way to avoid a permanent stain is to act quickly. As soon as you notice the pencil mark, try to wash the item immediately. Pre-treat the spot with a liquid detergent and let it sit for a few minutes before putting it into the washing machine. Cold water is best to protect the fabric.
For more persistent pencil markings, create a paste by mixing rubbing alcohol with salt. Rub the mixture into the stained area and allow it to sit for around 15 minutes. When the time is up, dab at the stain with a cloth dipped in a solution of mild detergent and cold water. Finish off by letting the fabric air dry.
If the above methods fail, try using a combination of lemon juice and cream of tartar. Mix 1 teaspoon of each in a cup of water. Apply the mixture to the stained area and let it sit for 20 minutes. Soak the item in cold water for 10 minutes and then wash as per usual.
Finally, you can try using hydrogen peroxide. Dilute the hydrogen peroxide with a few parts water and then apply it directly to stain. Leave to sit for 2 minutes and then rinse in cold water. Wash the item in the washing machine with a regular detergent and air dry.
