Before you start attempting to remove the pencil stains, it’s best to vacuum the entire rug to remove any dirt and debris that might have accumulated. This will help ensure that you don’t spread the pencil marks while cleaning.
Area rugs come in a variety of fabrics, such as wool, cotton, and synthetic fibers. Different fabrics respond differently to cleaning products, so it’s important to identify what type of fabric your rug is made from before you begin cleaning.
Before using any type of cleaning solution, it’s important to spot-test it on an inconspicuous area of rug. This will ensure that the cleaning solution won’t cause any discoloration or damage to the fabric of the rug.
Once you’ve identified the type of fabric of your rug and spot-tested the cleaning solution, create a cleaning solution by mixing one tablespoon of a mild detergent with four cups of warm water. Make sure to mix thoroughly until the detergent is completely dissolved.
Using a clean, white cloth, dip it into the cleaning solution and gently blot at the pencil marks until they start to fade away. Do not rub, as this will only smear marks and make them harder to remove.
After you’ve blotted at the pencil marks, it’s important to rinse the area with clean water. Using a clean, white cloth, blot at the area until all traces of the cleaning solution are gone.
Once you’ve removed pencil marks and rinsed away the cleaning solution, let the rug dry completely. This could take several hours, depending on the type of fabric and how much water was used.
