Prepping the Stain

The first step to cleaning any stain is to pre-treat it. Removing wet paint should be done as soon as possible, but if the paint has already dried, you’ll have to work extra hard to get it out. Start by soaking the garment in cold water for at least 30 minutes. This will help loosen the paint. Once the garment is soaked, turn it inside out and pretreat the stain with a stain remover. Let the pretreatment sit for up to 15 minutes before washing or spot treating the stain.

Washing Out Stain

Once the stain has been prepped, you can begin to work on removing it from the fabric. If you’re dealing with acrylic paint, you can use dish detergent or laundry detergent to clean the stained area. For oil-based paints, use a solvent-based cleaner like turpentine. Place the garment flat on a surface and apply detergent/solvent directly to the stain. Use an old toothbrush, rag, or scrub brush to work the cleaner into fabric. Rinse the stained area with warm water after use.

Removing Tough Stains

Sometimes even after pre-treating and washing out the stain, it can remain ingrained in fabric. If this is the case, you may have to resort to stronger measures. Try using rubbing alcohol, hairspray, or nail polish remover. Spot treat the area with the product and wait 15 minutes before washing off. Repeat as needed until stain disappears. Be sure to only spot treat the affected area, since these products can damage other parts of the fabric.

Drying Garment

Once the stain has been removed, the final step is to dry the garment. Hang the garment outside in the sun or lay it flat on an absorbent towel. If the garment cannot placed in direct sunlight, you can dry it in the dryer on a low heat setting. Always check garment first for colorfastness and shrinkage before drying.
