Removing Water-Based Paints

Water-based paints, such as acrylics and Latex, are easier to clean than oil-based paints. While the paint is still wet, you can remove it with plain water and a paper towel or cloth rag. Blot the area and quickly rinse the paint off with cold or lukewarm water.

Removing Oil-Based Paints

Oil-based paints, such as enamels and alkyds, are more difficult to remove because they are heavier and contain resins. To remove these types of paint stains, you will need to use a paint thinner or mineral spirits. Start by blotting stain with a cloth rag and then apply a small amount of paint thinner to the stained area. Gently dab the area and then immediately rinse the stained area with lukewarm water. Be sure to open windows for ventilation purposes when using a paint thinner.

Handwashing Method

Once the paint has dried, you can try the handwashing method to remove paint. First, scrub stained area with a drop of liquid detergent and warm water. Rinse area with cold water and then blot with a clean cloth. Repeat the process until paint has been removed.

Steam Cleaning Method

For stubborn paint stains that won't come out with handwashing, you can try steam cleaning the tunic. Place the fabric in a steamer and turn it on low heat. As the steam penetrates the fabric, it will help to loosen the paint and make it easier to remove. When the steam cleaning process is complete, rinse the tunic in lukewarm water and then air dry.

Professional Cleaners

If these methods don’t work, you can always take the tunic to a professional cleaner who has expertise and specialty products to remove the paint. It’s important to note that some professional cleaners may not be able to remove the paint without damaging fabric.
