1. Begin by Diluting the Paint

Before attempting any other methods, you should try to dilute the paint using lukewarm water. Wet a cloth with the water and gently dab the stain until it begins to fade. Make sure to use a blotting motion, not a scrubbing one, in order to avoid spreading the paint outwards. This method may work better for water-based paints, but if your paint is oil-based, you will need to move on to step two.

2. Use Mild Soap and Water

If the damp cloth doesn't do trick, you can try using a mild soap and warm water. Putting a few drops of the soap on stain can help to loosen it and make it easier to remove. Use a soft cloth to gently rub the stained area in a circular motion. Avoid using too much force as this could cause the paint to spread. Once all traces of the paint have been removed, rinse off the remaining soap with cold water and let the top dry completely.

3. Try Rubbing Alcohol Solution

Rubbing alcohol is an effective choice for removing both water- and oil-based paint stains. Create a solution of equal parts rubbing alcohol and water and apply it to the stained area. Then, use a cloth to scrub the surface in a circular motion until the stain is gone. Finally, rinse the area with cold water and let the top dry.

4. Utilize Acetone Nail Polish Remover

If rubbing alcohol doesn’t work, you can try a more concentrated solution of acetone nail polish remover. However, this should be used as a last resort as acetone can be quite harsh and may cause discoloration or damage to certain natural fabrics. So first, test the remover on an inconspicuous area before proceeding. Once it's been determined that it won't damage fabric, apply a small amount of the acetone to the stained area and use a gentle scrubbing motion to remove it. Then, rinse the stained area with cold water and let the top dry.

5. Apply a Specialist Stain Remover

If all else fails, you can always opt for a specialist stain remover. These are specifically designed to be used on delicate fabrics and can help to easily eliminate stubborn paint stains. Follow the instructions on the product carefully and be sure to rinse off the excess solution with cold water once stain has been removed. Let top dry completely before wearing it again.

Conclusion

Paint stains on tops can be a hassle but, fortunately, they don’t have to be permanent. With a few simple cleaning solutions, you can quickly and easily remove the unwanted paint spots and keep your tops looking new.
